Footwear firms back new tannery in western China

Moves by the authorities in China to encourage leather production in the country to move westwards have been confirmed by the opening of a new tannery in Gansu province.

The new facility belongs to the Hongliang Tannery group and will have the capacity to process 600,000 bovine hides a year. It is located in a new economic development zone in Guanghe County and will house its own technical research centre. Total investment in setting the facility up is estimated at $12 million.

A special opening ceremony for the new tannery took place on October 22 with a series of major Chinese footwear brands—including Aokang, Belle, Senda and Red Dragonfly—taking part.

The new facility will allow Hongliang Tannery to double its production capacity and will make the group the fifth largest leather producer in China, according to the China Leather Industry Association. The association said this project was part of a “revitalisation and technical renovation programme” for key industries, which has been launched by the Ministry of Industry and Information’s
National Development and Reform Commission.

Objectives of the programme include boosting livestock farming, encouraging labour diversity in rural areas, as well as on driving economic growth.
