Under Armour to launch basketball shoes

Sports brand Under Armour is preparing to launch a line of four basketball shoes called Micro G, according to media in the company’s home city, Baltimore.

Asked if he felt Under Armour could, in time, compete with rival brand Nike, senior vice-president for footwear, Gene McCarthy, said: “None of us want to be anything but number one. Why enter a category to be number 9? Who does that?”

However, research organisation SportsONESource has calculated the Nike and its affiliated brands have around a 95% share of the US basketball shoe market at the moment, with its Jordan brand commanding a 72% share.
