Kentucky footwear factory to stay open

The Red Wing Shoe Company, which specialises in work boots, has reversed plans to close its manufacturing plant in Danville, Kentucky, local media have reported.

Red Wing announced in 2009 that it expected production at the Danville plant to cease by the middle of this year, but local news sources have quoted the company’s president, Dave Murphy, as saying demand for work boots has gone up, meaning operations will continue.

“The Danville facility and their employees have always operated at a very high level of quality and productivity,” Mr Murphy said. “Having this capacity remain online in these uncertain times is a competitive advantage we need to maintain. Lessening our dependence on sourced footwear and making more boots at our US facilities is a key initiative for our company. Keeping the Danville plant operating is one of the solutions we are pursuing.”

The Danville Red Wing plant will operate with approximately 75 full-time employees, a number that could increase to 100. At the time the plant closure was announced last year, the facility employed around 200.
