Spain’s footwear imports increased by 22.3% during the first six months of 2010, according to new figures released by the Spanish National Footwear Federation (FICE). The country imported 218 million pairs during the first half of the year with a combined value of EUR 918 million.

FICE said that 74% of the shoes had come from China, far and away the biggest overseas supplier. Only a small proportion of these shoes from China, around 12% of the total, had leather uppers. Other countries of origin on the list were Vietnam with 7.4% of the total, Brazil with 2.4%, India with 2.2% and Italy with 2%.

Spanish footwear manufacturers exported far fewer pairs over the six-month period, 57 million pairs, but their total value almost equalled that of the imported shoes at EUR 900 million.
