DMF still causing footwear recalls

15/10/2010
The China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) has confirmed that of 40 instances so far this year of shoes exported to the European Union from China being recalled, the suspected presence of the banned chemical dimethylfumarate (DMF) was the reason in 38 of them, accounting for 95% of all cases.

According to legislation that came into force in the European Union in May last year, products containing DMF must not be placed on the market. The legislation came in after reports of shoes that had come into contact with DMF, used as a desiccant and fungicide by some shippers, had caused skin reactions in some consumers.

The CLIA issued a warning to footwear manufacturers in China saying they must make quality and safety their top priorities and pointing out that our products are available on the market to help prevent mould developing in shoe consignments during transit.
