Ethiopian leather for new Geox shoes

Ethiopia-based Ramsay Shoe Factory is to start producing shoes for Italian footwear brand Geox this month. The company signed a $1.3 million deal with Geox in July and says 60,000 pairs will be shipped from November 31.

The shoes will contain 25% locally produced leather, according to AllAfrica.com. Geox visited a number of tanneries and chose Sheba, Batu, and Afdel as its Ethiopian leather suppliers.

The Italian brand also reviewed 24 samples before awarding the contract to Ramsay. The company, which has the capacity to produce 2,000 pairs a day will produce just 1,500 pairs a day from now as the Geox Respira shoes have very specific design specifications.
