Downturn forces closure of half the footwear producers in Bulgaria

30/09/2010
Half of the estimated 400 footwear production companies that were active in Bulgaria at the start of the economic downturn in 2008 have had to close down, a tade union official has said.

Ivan Kolev, deputy head of the trade union that represents footwear workers in the eastern European country, has said around 200 companies are active in the sector at the moment.

Mr Kolev added, however, that the plants that remain are now working to full capacity and could, he claimed, be proud of the quality of the shoes they produce. He said Bulgaria was the fourth-biggest European exporter of shoes to Italy, after Spain, Portugal and Romania.
