Increase in exhibitor numbers at Modacalzado

27/09/2010
The latest edition of the Modacalzado and Iberpiel footwear and leathergoods exhibitions took place in Madrid from September 24–26.

The events attracted 305 exhibitors, showing off collections for the spring-summer 2011 season. The organisers pointed out that 76 of the exhibitors had not taken part in the September 2009 edition, a sign they said of better times for the footwear and leathergoods sectors in Spain.

Twelve of the exhibitors were from La Rioja. Not for the first time, the authorities in the region made an effort to show support for footwear producers there with the autonomous community’s president, Pedro Sanz, paying a formal visit to the exhibition.

La Rioja’s footwear exports increased by 13.5% in the first seven months of this year, compared to the same period in 2009, reaching EUR 120 million. A total of 242 companies in the region are connected to the footwear industry, employing a combined total of 2,836 workers.

In a statement, Mr Sanz praised the commitment these companies have shown in recent years to innovation, increasing efficiency and expansion into new overseas markets.
