Laid off by text message

A footwear firm in Portugal has come in for widespread criticism after telling its employees by text message that they had lost their jobs.

The 18 workers at the factory run by Pinhosil in Arouca near Oporto each received the same message at the end of August. It said that the business was closing down and that they would receive letters of confirmation to allow them to claim unemployment benefit.

All 18 agreed to go to the factory to protest against the company's communication methods and to ask for a fuller explanation, but no one from the Pinhosil management team was available to talk to them.
