Northampton prepares footwear exhibition

The city of Northampton is preparing to launch a new exhibition celebrating its most famous product, footwear.

The event at the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, entitled Sons of Saint Crispin (a reference to one of the patron saints of the footwear industry), will showcase the work of local boot and shoe manufacturers. It will run from September 11 to February 6.

On announcing the event, local politician Paul Varnsverry, said: “The boot and shoe manufacturing heritage of the town and county is recognised the world over and is something we are proud to celebrate. I grew up in a part of Northampton where there were several shoe factories nearby, which a number of our neighbours worked at. I remember watching one, a retired cobbler, manufacturing a pair of tan brogues for my paternal grandfather. This instilled in me an interest in how clothing is put together, which endures to this day."

He said the Sons of Saint Crispin exhibition will be informative and interesting for people of all ages and will give visitors an understanding and respect for the skills of the workers who have "guaranteed Northampton's place on the global map".

The exhibition also features a small taste of Saint Crispin’s fair, a festival that was held in the centre of Northampton to celebrate Saint Crispin's day (October 25) each year.
