Nike deems itself the World Cup winner

Although it was adidas that provided the uniforms for World Cup winners Spain, Nike believes it is the overall brand winner of the tournament.

The company, which supplied kit for runners up, the Netherlands, points out that the winning goal was scored by the foot of Andrés Iniesta, who was wearing Nike Elite Series football boots.

According to Nike UK head of corporate communications, Charlie Brooks, there were more Nike boots on the pitch in South Africa than of any other brand. He described the event as “an immense success" for the brand, with football category sales up 39% in the first quarter compared with the same period last year.

However, adidas also said the event had been “absolutely positive” and that it expects to record sales of €1.5 billion for the year.
