End of the line for XTRATUFs

01/07/2010
US media have begun to report that Honeywell, manufacturers of the XTRATUF neoprene boot, have decided to move production of the footwear to China, closing the factory it runs in Rock Island, Illinois.

A radio station in Alaska, KRBD, said it had received a brief written note from Honeywell confirming the move. It also quoted the mayor of Rock Island, David Pauley, as saying he had learned of the move several months ago, and that he had asked Honeywell if there was anything he could do to help keep the factory, only to learn that the decision to consolidate all production of the boots in China had already been taken. He calculated that his community would lose between 250 and 300 jobs as a result.

The boots are popular in farming and fishing communities across the US because of their high levels of waterproof protection and comfort.

XTRATUFs were first made by the BF Goodrich company in the 1950s. In the 1970s, production moved to Rock Island. Honeywell bought the brand in 2008.
