According to Germany-based chemicals company BASF, chemical expertise will play an important part in the build up to, and during, the World Cup in South Africa. Several of its innovations will be used during the tournament.
In addition to its construction chemicals used for special flooring, energy-absorbing foams for artificial turf and pigments for use in stadiums, the company is producing special plastics and leather chemicals for football boots.
The firm produces a special plastic for the soles and studs of soccer boots to make them lightweight, durable and easy on the joints. A special leather chemical helps make football boots waterproof by coating each fibre with a protective film. According to the company, the leather remains breathable and the players' feet remain dry even when it rains.
