TNF settles bacteria-free shoe case

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear provider The North Face (TNF) is to pay $207,500 to settle claims that shoes advertised to kill bacteria were never tested.

The brand, which is owned by VF Corporation, was sued by the EPA last September. The association believed TNF’s claims that more than 70 of its footwear models could inhibit the growth of disease-causing bacteria and offer antimicrobial protection were unfounded.

The claims were unsubstantiated, according to the EPA, because although the shoes contained registered pesticides, they were never tested. It sued the company after it found the shoes being sold online and at a store in San Francisco.
