Shoe architect offers constructed chaos

A former architect is making a name as a footwear designer by tapping into Romanian women’s obsession with heels. Now known as Romania’s ‘shoe architect’, Mihai Albu has begun to attract international attention with has begun to attract international attention with his latest creation, sandals with a 30-centimetre heel.

Mr Albu has said he combines his former skill as an architect with art and mathematics to come up with his creations and that he draws most inspiration from great artists and architects of the past, including Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi and Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.

The skyscraper sandals, as his new design has come to be called, are hand-crafted in his Bucharest workshop and, in spite of a price-tag of €1,200 per pair, he has already received dozens of orders from wealthy women across the country.

In a recent interview with AFP, Mr Albu said: “I am creating constructed chaos. Heels have an advantage because many women don’t have long legs. They reposition the waist.”
