According to reports, India’s Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) is to open four new academic institutes this year.

The new sites will be set up in Chennai, Kolkata, Chindwara and Haryana and are expected to cost Rs3.8 billion ($86.6 million). Around 1,500 students will be taken on by the four units and five or six different academic programmes will be available at each. The institute will work with Germany’s LDT Nagold and Italy’s A R Sutoria on the course content.

The FDDI told the Press Trust of India that even during the recession the footwear industry was growing at a rate of 15% and that this is set to increase rapidly in the coming years. Exports are expected to total $7 billion by 2012.
