Pakistan’s shoe leather production soars
Figures show Pakistan’s finished leather production grew 27% in January, while shoe production rose 4% and sole leather production grew 6%.
During the month, the country produced 1.9 million square-metres of finished leather and 18 tonnes of sole leather compared with 1.5 million square-metres and 17 tonnes in January 2009. Pakistan also produced 2.8 million pairs of shoes in January compared with 2.7 million pairs during the prior-year period.
For the first seven months of the financial year (July 2009 to January 2010), finished leather production totalled 13.7 million square-metres, up 15% compared with 11.9 million square-metres in the prior-year period. Sole leather production soared by 87% to 127 tonnes from 68 tonnes in the seven-month period a year earlier, while shoe production rose 5% to 17.5 million pairs compared with 16.8 million pairs.
