Skechers breaks ground on new distribution centre

Footwear brand Skechers has broken ground on its new 1.82 million square-foot distribution centre in Rancho Belago, California. California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was there to mark the occasion.

The new facility will handle the distribution of the company’s product in the US and Canada and will be the largest LEED-certified building in the US. The company will move its 1.6 million square-feet of space from five existing buildings across Ontario, California, to the new facility, which should be up and running in 2011.

Mr Schwarzenegger said: "Skechers will be the first phase of development here and that's something to be celebrated. Plus, the fact that this will be the most environmentally sound, progressive, sophisticated building in the United States proves that what's good for the economy can be good for the environment too."

"This new facility will provide Skechers with the logistics and distribution support required to match our growth," stated Michael Greenberg, company president. "By using the latest efficient technologies, we're able to streamline our expenses while reducing our environmental impact at the same time."
