Footwear asks for free trade agreement exemption

Footwear industry leaders in Mexico have spoken out against a proposed free trade agreement between the country and Brazil, saying the Mexican footwear sector would be greatly affected by such a deal.
The president of the footwear industry association of the state of Guanajuato (CICEG), Armando Martín Dueñas, was among a group of industry figures that held a meeting in recent days with politicians to ask them to exclude footwear from any future free trade agreement with Brazil. He later told local media that the footwear industry was not trying to stop commercial relationships from flourishing, but was simply trying to create and keep jobs.
He said Brazil had an advantage over Mexico because it had stayed strict about applying tariffs to footwear imports. “We, on the other hand, have opened up our market and have asked for nothing in return,” he said.
