Rioja president praises footwear as Madrid fair begins

The president of the autonomous community of La Rioja, Pedro Sanz, was one of the guests of honour on the opening day of the Modacalzado footwear exhibition in Madrid on March 11.
Mr Sanz, whose region is the third-biggest producer of shoes in Spain, said the footwear industry in La Rioja was standing up very in the face of the country’s ongoing economic difficulties. He pointed out that La Rioja brought in €148.7 million in footwear exports in 2009, an increase of 4% on 2008. Over the same period, he said the overall performance of the Spanish footwear industry showed a fall of 7.1% in export revenues.
France, Germany and Italy were the principal export markets for shoes made in La Rioja, he said. The community has 262 footwear manufacturers employing a total of 2,856 workers.
