The chairman of Sri Lanka’s Leather Footwear Advisory Council, Ranjith Hettiarachchy, has said he expects the industry there to build closer ties with suppliers and partners in India.

He said Sri Lanka had good available of “trainable labour” and a good record in industrial relations, which indicated to him that the country ought to be able to earn more from footwear in the export market than the $17 million it achieved in 2009. He added that building new contacts and links with Indian tanners and footwear manufacturers would help.
