Competition seeks to attract budding footwear entrepreneurs

The SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan is offering creative young people interested in starting their own footwear business the chance to win a place on an intensive fashion management course.

Those interested have to prepare a business plan and submit it to the school before April 30 2010. The aim is to help aspiring fashion entrepreneurs find their feet. The competition is open to all branches of the fashion industry.

It will reward 15 participants who propose the most innovative and financially viable ideas. The competition is open to individuals or teams composed of a maximum of three people from anywhere in the world. Candidates can upload their applications on a dedicated e-platform. The business plan should include a detailed description of the idea, plus plans for financing as well as the participants’ CVs. A 3-minute video with a team’s pitch may also be included.

“With the first signs of economic recovery we expect that the creativity that characterises the business of fashion leads to the blossoming of interesting entrepreneurial ideas. We are not only looking for new designers or products but especially for particularly fresh and innovative ideas which also interpret emerging trends such as ethical and sustainable business,” explained Elisabetta Marafioti, professor of strategy at SDA Bocconi and coordinator of the initiative. “During the course the winners will be able to deepen their knowledge of the fashion business system and strengthen their management tools so as to then be able to turn their ideas into professional documents with which to present their proposals to potential investors.”

The winners will be selected by two senior faculty members from SDA Bocconi and a professional from the private equity sector. The 15 winners will enjoy free participation, on July 12 and 13, at an intensive course at SDA Bocconi in Milan which will include lessons by faculty of Bocconi’s Master in Fashion, Experience and Design Management, case studies and guest speakers from industry leaders and will allow participants to update themselves on industry trends and learn key points in terms of strategy, branding and business planning, necessary to launch a new entrepreneurial venture.

Aside from the winners, all participants will receive feedback on their proposal from the selection committee with useful comments and suggestions to improve their idea.
