Deichmann sets up in Spain

04/03/2010

German football retail group Deichmann has opened offices in Barcelona that will serve as headquarters for the company's assault on the Spanish market.

The company said on releasing its results for 2009 that Spain represented one of its main opportunities for growth this year. Deichmann has released few details of the steps it intends to take in Spain, but it has announced that its first stores there will open in the next few months, with Madrid, Valencia and Zaragoza as the initial cities where it will have a retail presence.

Deichmann already has 2,767 stores in 18 European countries and the US. In spite of the global economic downturn, it grew its sales by 9% in 2009 and sold 8.2% more shoes, 138 million pairs in total, than in 2008. Last year it also opened a state-of-the-art logistics hub in Slovakia.
