A closer look at the Tannery of the Year finalists
The ten Tannery of the Year finalists have now been named, and represent nine countries in total.
China, because it is a category in its own right has two: ISA TanTec in Guangzhou and Simona Tanning in Huizhou.
One of the European finalists, Bridge of Weir, is based in Scotland, while the other, Josef Heinen, is located in Germany. Africa’s finalists are the Ethiopian Tannery Share Company in Ethiopia and South Cape Ostrich Tanning in South Africa, while the Americas finalists are Procesos Húmedos, based in Mexico, and Fonseca in Argentina. The finalists for Asia excluding China are PrimeAsia Vietnam in Vietnam and TATA International in India.
The ten finalists also represent an important spectrum in terms of the type of leather produced. Bridge of Weir and Fonseca focus on producing upholstery leather for the automotive sector, while others, including the Ethiopian Tannery Share Company, Josef Heinen, PrimeAsia Vietnam, Simona Tanning and South Cape Ostrich Tanning, focus on leather for footwear and leathergoods. TATA International produces for a broad range of sectors, while Procesos Húmedos specialises in wet blue production.
Detailed accounts of each visit have been included in World Leather magazine, apart from visits to the tanneries in Asia excluding China, which will appear in the upcoming February-March issue of the magazine.
With
the focus on corporate social responsibility, Tannery of the Year's aim
is to identify the two best tanneries in five regions around the world:
China, the rest of Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Europe. We have
published in World Leather in-depth reports into what makes these
tanneries shining examples of good practice in all aspects of corporate
social responsibility: environmental concerns, good relationships with
employees, partners, suppliers and the local community, commitment to
innovation and financial probity.
The evening starts with a champagne reception followed by a gourmet four-course meal including unlimited fine wine and soft drinks.
The dinner takes place in the glittering surroundings of the Bauhinia Banqueting Suite within the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which overlooks Hong Kong Harbour.
