Rogers adds antimicrobial functionality to Poron XRD

Footwear impact protection material Poron XRD now features Microban antimicrobial technology to provide consistent, reliable and long-lasting protection from the inside-out, technology provider Rogers Corporation has announced.

The addition of Microban will inhibit the growth of the bacteria, mould and mildew that can cause stains and odours in shoes.

Warm, moist environments found in places such as shoes, protective apparel and equipment provide favourable conditions for bacteria and developing odours. Hot, sweaty gear quickly becomes mouldy, bacteria-filled, and smelly. “It happens to everyone, but it doesn’t have to,” Rogers said on announcing the new development.

“On unprotected surfaces, bacteria can double in number every twenty minutes,” said Microban International’s vice-president of marketing, Kathy Hall. “New Poron XRD materials with Microban will stay cleaner and fresher because our technology works around the clock to fight the growth of microbes that quickly multiply on shoes, protective apparel and equipment.”

Dave Sherman, Rogers’ new business development manager, commented: “As a leading ingredient brand for various athletic, outdoor and other consumer products, it was important to find an effective way to address concerns over the growth and spread of bacteria, mould and mildew. The partnership with Microban International will help to ensure Poron materials contain the best antimicrobial protection available.”

Rogers pointed out that many protective apparel and equipment brands have incorporated Poron XRD protection into their 2010 and 2011 designs, and said the inclusion of Microban technology will give these products an extra advantage over traditional protective gear and footwear.
