Indian shoe exports fall

Indian leather exports fell 16.6% between April and December 2009. Exports for the period totalled $2.4 billion compared with $2.8 billion during the nine-month period in 2008. In rupee terms, leather exports fell 8% to Rs113.2 billion from Rs123.1 billion.

The breakdown showed that leather footwear exports dropped 12.3% to $812.8 million from $926.8 million. Footwear component exports were down 23.3% to $157.5 million from $205.5 million and non-leather footwear exports fell 13.3% to $29.5 million from $34 million in the prior-year period.
