Peter Mangione, managing director of consultancy company Global Footwear Partnerships, has given a list of the top ten most popular outdoor footwear brands among US consumers.

Mr Mangione, former president of the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America, compiled the list based on the market-share each brand commanded in 2008.

The top ten, in descending order, is as follows:

Ugg
Merrell
Timberland
Keen
Nike
Adidas
Columbia
Skechers
New Balance
Vamps

Mr Mangione said that 45% of shoe sales in the US in 2009 were athletic shoes.

“Athletic shoes are still by far the most important category in the
US
footwear market,” he said during a presentation at the 2010 India International Leather Fair in Chennai on February 1.

He estimated that consumers in the
US bought around 990 million pairs of athletic shoes last year.
