East Africa missing out on potential

A senior official in Kenya’s ministry of livestock development has said that communities in east Africa are losing substantial potential income, investment and employment opportunities through failure to process hides and skins.

Permanent secretary, Kenneth Lusaka, has told local media that the region is currently losing out on the potential added value of processing hides and skins from 4.5 million cattle and 14.5 million goats and sheep annually.

If the communities involved were to improve their performance in this area, they could secure investment of up to $200 million in potential investment and more than 60,000 job opportunities, not counting further added value that could come from using the raw material to make footwear and leathergoods.
