Adidas and Li Ning switch

According to reports, adidas has decided to pull out of the Portland Pearl District just as Chinese sportswear brand sets up there.

The Germany-based firm announced it will close its flagship store in the area on January 17. Adidas told news centre KGW.com: "This is not a specific reaction to the economy, merely a normal part of managing the retail business and the store portfolio."

Li Ning, on the other hand, opened a brand new store in Portland at the beginning of January (see sportstextiles 07.12.09). While the sportswear brand has approximately 6,800 stores in China, the Portland store is its first outside Asia. Portland has long been a hub for the sporting goods industry, home to Nike’s headquarters as well as to adidas’ North American headquarters.

Puma also recently left the area.
