Leather exports down: government blamed

The footwear and leather sector in Pakistan has reported a drop of more than 25% in exports over the first five months of the current financial year, compared to the same period 12 months ago when it also registered a decrease of more than 20% on the previous year.

In the first five months of the current fiscal year (July to November 2009), the industry in Pakistan exported products worth $347.1 million, compared to $466.1 million in the corresponding period of the last fiscal year.

In a letter sent to the government’s commerce secretary, Zafar Mahmood, the chairman of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA), Gulzar Firoz, said that the federal government has promised to set up a road map for the rehabilitation of leather sector, but that there is still no solution in sight.

Exports of leather apparel fell by 15.9% to $165.1 million over the five-month period compared to $196.3 million in the corresponding period last year. Similarly, the leather footwear exports fell by 13.6% and registered exports of $36.4 million, compared to $42.1 million.
