Vietnam’s leather shoe exports fall 16%
Vietnam’s industry and trade ministry has revealed that the country’s leather shoe exports fell 16% year-on-year during the January to November period, totalling $3.6 billion.
Leather shoe exports for December are expected to reach between $300 and $400 million, which would bring the total to almost US$4 billion. However, this falls a long way short of the $4.7 billion government target.
The drop has been attributed to competition from countries such as Brazil, India, Bangladesh and Cambodia. Some have also said the decline is connected to the 10% anti-dumping tax imposed on the country’s shoe exports to the EU.
Last year, Vietnam’s leather shoe export turnover was $4.8 billion last year and there were 500 shoe manufacturers in operation, providing 600,000 jobs.
