New innovation centre for Mexican industry

A new centre for innovation for the whole of the leather and footwear supply chain has opened in León, Mexico, in an attempt to help companies work more closely with each other.

The new centre, Prospecta, will serve as a detailed information resource for tanners, their suppliers, footwear manufacturers and footwear retailers. The federal government of Mexico, the state of Guanajuato and the city of León all helped put together the necessary funding for the centre, along with private investors. The project cost an estimated US$6 million to get off the ground.

The formal inauguration of Prospecta took place on November 27, with the governor of Guanajuato, Juan Manuel Oliva, presiding.

Afterwards, the president of Mexico’s National Tanning Industry Association (Canalcur), Jaime Dueñas, told leatherbiz.com that Prospecta would help companies in all parts of the leather and footwear supply chain innovate and increase their productivity. He added: “The most important thing of all is that it will act as a catalyst for everyone in the sector to get together and talk, to decide together the best course of action for us to take to renew our businesses, to interpret fashion trends, to approach the domestic and international market successfully.”
