Tannery of the Year: Americas finalists announced
26/11/2009
The two tanneries, who will go forward to the inaugural Tannery of the Year Awards event, which will take place at APLF on March 29, 2010, are the Fonseca tannery in Lanús, Argentina, and the Procesos Húmedos tannery in León, Mexico.
Both tanneries feature in extensive reports in the December-January issue of World Leather, with details of how they are responding to the challenges facing the tanning sector today.
After the Americas, the attention of the Tannery of the Year Awards will move to the last region for this inaugural programme, the rest of Asia.
With the focus on corporate social responsibility, Tannery of the Year's aim is to identify the two best tanneries in five regions around the world: China, the rest of Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Europe. We will publish in World Leather in-depth reports into what makes these tanneries shining examples of good practice in all aspects of corporate social responsibility: environmental concerns, good relationships with employees, partners, suppliers and the local community, commitment to innovation and financial probity.
The driving force for this initiative came from the International Leather Forum in Paris in 2007, which urged the industry to do more to present leather in a positive light. Tannery of the Year is World Leather’s contribution to this.
Congratulations to Fonseca and Procesos Húmedos, and to the other shortlisted tanneries for the Americas: Temola, Cuautla, Mexico; Curfimex, León, Mexico; Cuero Centro, León, Mexico; Curtume Moderno, Petrolina, Brazil; Independência, Nova Andrina, Brazil; Bertin, Lins, Brazil.
