Sole leather production doubles

The latest official data for the leather sector in Pakistan shows an upward trend in production, with growth of 6.1% in finished leather output during the month of August.

The country’s tanneries produced 1.8 million square-metres of finished leather during the month, compared to 1.7 million square-metres in August 2008.

There was also strong growth in the production of sole leather: 17 tonnes in August 2009 compared to 8 tonnes in August 2008. Over the first two months of the current financial year, July and August, Pakistan produced more than double the amount of sole leather compared to the same two months last year. The 2009 figure was 33 tonnes, while 2008’s total was 16 tonnes.

Production of footwear was down in August, however, by 9.1% compared to August 2008.
The country produced almost 2.5 million pairs in August 2009 compared to almost 2.7 million pairs in 2008. The figures come from the Federal Bureau of Statistics.
