Further decline for Chinese leather shoe exports

16/10/2009

Exports of leather footwear from China fell again in August, the latest month for which figures are available.

The China Leather Industry Association said the decline in exports in August 2009 compared to the same month in 2008 was of 23.7% in volume and 18.9% in value.

Total exports of leather shoes in the first eight months of the year reached 500 million pairs with a combined value of $5.57 billion.

Despite this, there has been some positive news from one footwear producing region in the country, which appears to be experiencing a turnaround.

Taizhou in Zhejiang Province posted higher shoe exports for both July and August. July exports rose 1.4%, while August exports grew 11%. Footwear exports from Taizhou rose 54.2% to $56.9 million during the first eight months of the year.
