New Vietnamese eco-tannery starts production

13/10/2009

A new 'eco' tannery in Vietnam run by Sino-German tanning group ISA Tan Tec has processed its first hides. The company confirmed that production had begun on October 9.

ISA Tan Tec expects the tannery to be producing leather at a rage of 2 million square-metres a year using "as few resources as possible". The company is calling the leather it produces here LITE, for 'low impact on the environment'. Client organisations that will use LITE leather include Timberland, New Balance, Keen and Hush Puppies. The chief executive of Timberland, Jeffrey Swartz, has said of the product: "ISA's LITE leather is setting a new standard for the footwear industry."

The company already operates an eco tannery at its corporate headquarters in Guangzhou, China.

ISA Tan Tec is investing $8.7 million in the new tannery in Vietnam.
