Italian technical outdoor footwear sole company Vibram has developed a new sole to be used by mountain footwear firm La Sportiva.
The new Skialp sole for ski mountaineering is made from a lightweight insulating compound that complies with international ISMF (International Ski Mountaineering Federation) standards. The shape of the sole is designed to clear itself of snow and to enhance grip and stability.
The Gumlite compound used is said to provide optimum grip on smooth, slippery surfaces as well as on irregular terrain. Vibram has also created special boot inserts made from 75 shore rubber in the toe and heel sections, with a special front piece for the binding self-centring system.
The La Sportiva Stratos boot, which uses the sole, has a 100% carbon ‘3K Twill’ outer shell and weighs only 490 grammes. The liner, with its patented lacing system, weighs only 148 grammes.
