New footwear design centre for Istanbul
17/09/2009
The president of the Turkish Exporters Council, Mehmet Buyukeksi, has said that Istanbul will soon have its own footwear research and developments and training institute.
Mr Buyukeksi said that a new facility of this kind would help the leather and footwear sectors in Turkey improve the quality of their products and increase the volume and value of their exports.
Observers of the industry in Turkey have said that, although the country began to develop tanneries making shoe-upper leather some time ago, the footwear industry failed to build up successfully around them. Mr Buyukeksi said the new centre would employ experts from overseas to direct research and development and student training.
His hope is that Turkey will be able to create more of its own designs and sense of fashion, and will build up a better reputation in the world of fashion.
