Bank to gift school shoes to Madurai children

15/09/2009

The State Bank of India (SBI) will launch a scheme to distribute free footwear to children who attend government schools in Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu, following a complaint that most children there go to school barefoot.

G Ramanujam, the bank’s regional manager, told local media that the SBI had taken the decision after a local official informed it that many local families were too poor to buy footwear for their children.

Initially, the bank plans to distribute shoes to 3,000 students through branch managers, he said, adding that headteachers have been asked to identify the most needy students.
