Brazil imposes anti-dumping on Chinese shoes
10/09/2009
The Brazilian government will charge a tariff of $12.47 on each pair of formal shoes imported from China.
It said it was taking steps against alleged dumping carried out by Chinese manufacturers.
Sports shoes, beach shoes and slippers were exempt.
A study carried out by the footwear industry showed that between 2003 and 2007 imports of footwear from China rose by 549% while national production had fallen by 28%.
The president of Abicalçados, Brazil's main footwear industry body, Milton Cardoso, called the government decision courageous.
The anti-dumping measures will be in place for six months initially.
