Tannery of the Year: African shortlist announced
03/09/2009
World Trades Publishing and its partners have shortlisted two of the tanneries nominated for the Tannery of the Year Awards in the African category.
The two tanneries, who will go forward to the inaugural Tannery of the Year Awards event, which will take place at APLF in spring 2010, are the Pittards Ethiopia Tannery Share Company, Ethiopia and South Cape Ostrich Tanning Limited, South Africa.
Both tanneries feature in extensive reports in the August-September issue of World Leather, with details of how they are responding to the challenges facing the tanning sector today.
After Africa, the attention of the Tannery of the Year Awards will move to China.
With the focus on corporate social responsibility, the programme's aim is to identify the two best tanneries in five regions around the world: China, the rest of Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Europe. We will publish in World Leather in-depth reports into what makes these tanneries shining examples of good practice in all aspects of corporate social responsibility: environmental concerns, good relationships with employees, partners, suppliers and the local community, commitment to innovation and financial probity.
The driving force for this initiative came from the International Leather Forum in Paris in 2007, which urged the industry to do more to present leather in a positive light. Tannery of the Year is World Trades Publishing’s contribution to this.
