Minister opens new Nike footwear facility

The deputy chief minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu has formally inaugurated a new production facility for Lotus Footwear in the Cheyyar
Special Economic Zone, about 110 kilometres from Chennai.

The new factory has been set up by Feng Tay Enterprises of Taiwan to manufacture sports shoes for Nike. So far, the Taiwanese company has invested $34 million in the project.

By the end of the year it will have 11 production lines making 24,000 pairs of shoes a day. This will go up to 30,000 pairs when the plant reaches full capacity.

By then, there will be 15 production lines and a total of about 5,000 workers.
