New Zealand-based electronic payments provider Paymark believes there may be a glimmer of hope for the retail sector.

Its figures showed spending was slightly higher in July following a few static months. Total spending across its network was $3.48 billion, up 1.1% year-on-year. Stronger sales were registered in Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Marlborough towards the end of the month.

Footwear and liquor retailers saw the largest increases, with footwear spending up 24% year-on-year in July.

Paymark CEO, Simon Tong, said: “We have heard a bit about ‘green shoots’ starting to emerge from a number of economists over the last week, and our July spending data seems to support this. It will be interesting to see whether this continues in the coming months.”

Paymark processes more than 60 percent of all retail electronic transactions in New Zealand.
