Clarks acts on Amazon sourcing issue

06/08/2009

UK-based shoe company Clarks is the latest firm to respond to a controversial Greenpeace report on deforestation in the Amazon published in June.

Nike, adidas and Timberland are among the companies that have already decided to impose new traceability systems and membership of the Leather Working Group, a scheme under which large user organisations recognise good practice in large tanning groups, on their suppliers of leather in
Brazil.

"Clarks will require suppliers of Brazilian leather to certify, in writing, that they are not supplying leather from recently deforested areas in the Amazon biome,” the company said in a statement.
