The first phase of a Chinese-funded economic and trade cooperation zone in Ussuriysk in Russia has gone into operation.
Six manufacturing firms have opened for business on the site and, when the facility is complete, more than 60 large and medium-sized companies manufacturing a variety of goods, including footwear, are expected to set up offices and plants in the zone, which is close to the border with the Chinese province of Heilongjiang. Companies in the zone will enjoy preferential tax policies and legal and logistics services.
China has said that it intends to open similar economic and trade co-operation zones in five other countries: Zambia, Mauritius, Thailand, Pakistan and Cambodia.
