Vietnam: leather sector in difficulty despite US boost
16/07/2009
The Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association has reported export earnings of $2 billion for the first half of 2009, which falls well short of the target of more thant $5 billion the government had set for the six-month period.
The industry body has blamed the effects of the ongoing review into anti-dumping duties of 10% on Vietnamese leather shoes being imported into the European Union, which, traditionally, has been producers strongest export market.
On a brighter note, it said the value of exports to the US was up by 9% compared to the first half of 2008.
