Cricket star remembers his roots

One of the unlikely saviours of the England cricket team, which secured a draw against the odds in the first of five games in the Ashes series against Australia, has spoken of his passion for high-end leather footwear.

Australia looked certain to win the match in Cardiff, but Graeme Swann, better known for his spin bowling, was one of the players that held out for England on the final day on July 12, and scored 31 runs, the second-highest total in the innings.

In the build-up to the start of the biennial series, Mr Swann told the Financial Times that one of luxuries he allowed himself was shoes. He said: “I really like clothes, shoes and gadgets. Growing up in Northampton, I was always taught the value of proper leather shoes.”

He said his favourite footwear brand was Jeffrey West, one of only a few companies that have insisted on staying in Northampton to make high-end leather shoes.
