Shoe designer and climbing legend John Bachar has died during a climb at Dike Wall, near Mammoth Lakes in California.

A prominent rock climber for decades, Mr Bachar was best known for carrying out dangerous, daring and ground breaking ascents, especially in Yosemite and in the High Sierra of California. However, he entered the footwear market in 2003, working with Mexican outdoor footwear brand Acopa to found Acopa USA.

His designs for specialist shoes for rock-climbing became available right across North America.
