French media have confirmed reports in China that local firms there may have the opportunity to buy permanent licences for the Chinese market for the Pierre Cardin brand.
The designer has been quoted as saying in Paris-based daily Le Figaro: "The ball is in my court now and I have almost reached a decision."
Speculation started in the last days of June that licences for the Chinese market for Pierre Cardin shoes, leathergoods and travel goods could go to Chinese firms. A spokesperson for the Pierre Cardin office in Beijing, Ying Hao, told media there: "We are in talks with a few Chinese companies. Since we have so many agents in China, we will give priority to these agents."
Among the most prominent names on the list of agents, and possible bidders, are footwear manufacturers Jiansheng, from Guangdong province, and Aokang Group from Zhejiang province. Reuters said Jiansheng had moved to distance itself from reports linking it to the possible acquisition of the right to use the Pierre Cardin brand permanently in the Chinese market.
Pierre Cardin was one of the first Western fashion brands to enter China when it arrived in 1978.
