Positive outlook for Indonesian shoemakers
The Indonesian footwear believes its prospects may finally be looking up. According to reports, domestic sales and exports have increased as a result of a decline in imports from China and increased demand from EU countries.
Imports of Chinese shoes have fallen sharply after a government clampdown, leading to a significant increase in domestic sales. The industry is also expecting exports to rise 5% in the second half of the year, mainly driven by greater demand from Europe, which accounts for around 37% of Indonesian shoe exports.
Indonesian shoe production totalled 1.2 billion pairs in 2008. Around 800 million pairs were sports shoes.
